Show displays can be created on
the Aixia hotwire foam cutter from AFC

The design was not only practical in the sense that it
provided a comfortable space for our sales people and work surfaces to display our product
samples; but the design enabled us to showcase our product in a completely functional
sense. The esthetically pleasing design demonstrated the great versatility of
foam board as
an exhibit building material.
The 10’x10’ exhibit was fabricated entirely from foamboard, a product of The
Gilman Brothers Company. The strong, lightweight foamboard was bent, laminated, and cut to
form the required 3-dimensional shapes. Plain, bent (square), and fluted columns were
utilized to show the various fabricating processes and the resulting looks. Custom blades
and templates were devised to form the polystyrene column bases, capitals, table bases,
and decorative trim (all the black marbleized parts). Since foamboard readily accepts inks
and paints, they were perfect for creating the faux finishes and airbrushed surfaces
(backdrop). In addition, vinyl graphics were utilized to create the logo and company name
on the arched header.
The lightweight prefabricated components were easily assembled and disassembled. Although
all the components were tied together, the design was such that very little fastening was
needed. In essence, gravity held the individual parts in place and as such provided for an
extremely stable freestanding exhibit.
Although our initial inclination was to create a low cost, disposable-one-time-use
exhibit, we ultimately chose a design that would reflect the spirit of the designer and
promote the quality and versatility of the product used. None the less, the relatively low
material costs associated with an exhibit fabricated entirely from foam board
eased the
overall project cost and kept the price at a modest forty-nine dollars per square foot.
