This highly detailed wooden model sail ship of Dutch origin is a handmade
Museum quality model. The model is the De Groene Draeck a Lemsteraak (Type
of vessel) built by a model builder in Holland. This model is not built from
a kit!
About this vessel:
The Green Dragon is a Dutch Royal Yacht
The vessel was built as a 'Lemsteraak' which is a member of the Boyer family
of fishing boats which sailed the Zuider Zee during the late 1800's and
early last century. Lemeraaken as they are known in Holland were probably
the first factory fishing ships in history. They would sail with a small
fleet of fishing boats and collect their catches at sea then return to port
while the fleet continued catching more fish for their return trip. The main
catch being herring. The method of catching fish was not with a net but by
suspending many baited hooks on a single line from buoys. Today, like most
old sailing vessels throughout the world, Lemeraaken are mostly converted
into expensive pleasure yachts. De Groene Draeck was built by the Amsterdam
yard of De Freis Lench Jr during 1957 and was a national present for the
Princess Beatrix (now Queen Beatrix) on the occasion of her 18th birthday.
Her Majesty has used the ship ever since as regularly as State affairs
permit.
